In new team colors, Marc Gerstenkorn took off last weekend at the half-time race of the ADAC Kart Masters. At the Erftlandring, the youngster delivered a strong performance and celebrated a double victory in the Mini class. As fourth in the championship, he now still has a chance of winning the title.
The start to the new season of Germany’s biggest kart racing series didn’t go as planned for Marc Gerstenkorn. He was panting after his usual performance. But now came the liberating blow. On the 1,107-meter track in Kerpen, where the careers of Formula 1 world champions Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel already began, Marc started for the CV Performance Group for the first time.
Already in the free practice sessions he showed that he feels comfortable in his new team and drove best times. He kept to this in qualifying as well and tackled both heats from pole position. But in the first heat a small setback followed directly after the start: Marc dropped back to the end of the field. Afterwards, however, he showed a strong recovery and drove up to eighth place. “I overtook 15 drivers in the eight laps – more was not possible,” said the Swiss at the finish. The second heat, on the other hand, went without a hitch and with a win he secured third place on the grid for the finals.
In these, the Mini were again very close together and delivered gripping duels. After several lead changes, Marc crossed the finish line as the winner in both races. “These were intense races in which you couldn’t afford to make a mistake. That makes the double victory all the nicer. I concentrated fully on myself and thus laid the foundation for success. A big thanks to my mechanic, my new team and my sponsors for their commitment,” beamed Marc in the winner’s interview.
With the double victory in his luggage, he has now taken a big step forward in the overall standings and is within striking distance of the top in fourth place. The ADAC Kart Masters continues in two weeks’ time, when the races take place at Marc’s home track in Ampfing, Upper Bavaria.
